Nadia Reid's Xmas Show 2022

Date: Friday 16 December 2022

Venue: Port Chalmers Town Hall, North Dunedin

Time: 06:30pm - 10:00pm

Restrictions: R18

Critically acclaimed Auckland-born, Dunedin-raised musician Nadia Reid is continuing her annual tradition at the Port Chalmers Town Hall. Nadia Reid’s Christmas Show, now in its fourth (would be fifth) year, is a festive celebration of local music, artists and talent, under the backdrop of Reid’s spiritual home - Port Chalmers.

Now residing in Auckland, Reid has been diligently working on her fourth album before embarking on a new chapter and settling in the U.K. Her third album, Out of My Province released on the cusp of the pandemic was received hotly by critics. The Line of Best Fit declared it Reid’s “most polished album to date” with Uncut calling it "her best album yet”, awarding it 8/10.

Reid has completed three European tours with long-time collaborator Sam Taylor, performed several times in New York City, and completed countless tours of New Zealand and Australia including her recent collaboration with classical ensemble NZTrio. In between recent Covid-19 lockdowns, she completed an Opera House & Theatre tour of Aotearoa with her 6-piece band, and a 20-date “Reid & Ruins” tour with Tiny Ruins’ Hollie Fullbrook.

“It has been my goal from the beginning to treat this annual event as a way to mark time, to bring together a hand-picked selection of my favourite musicians, people, winemakers, brewers, and food”. It really does feel like a community affair. Each year a portion of the profit is sent to the Presbyterian Support Food Bank on Moray Place. It really is the highlight of my year!” says Reid.

This year’s line up will include award-winning artist, producer and current University of Otago ‘Mozart Fellow’ Sean Donnelly AKA SJD, legendary Oklahoma, USA based folk musician & world-class boot maker Flora Knight, and keeping you tapping your toes throughout the night will be the incredible DJ Tina Turntables. Nadia Reid will also perform, accompanied by her longtime collaborator and guitarist Sam Taylor.

Sean James Donnelly (SJD) is an award-winning musician/composer currently residing in Dunedin under the Mozart Fellowship at Otago University. He has released 8 albums under the nom-de-plume SJD since 1998. He has worked as a multi-instrumentalist and producer with many notable New Zealand artists, composed for film and television and made forays into experimental acoustic and electronic music and video. He has also composed multiple feature film soundtracks and for public and private commissions, as well as being a frequent live performer. His latest album entitled ‘Sweetheart’ was released in October 2022.

Flora Knight is a fiddle and player and bootmaker now based in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Knight was born in Canada and raised in New Zealand. Her set will include old time songs and fiddle tunes accompanied with singing and no doubt stories of her recent time in the USA where she has set up her bespoke bootmaking business. Knight has featured in country singing duo with Sean Donald (the pair won three golden guitar awards) and toured with the likes of Archer, The Eastern and most recently recorded an EP at The famed Sun Studios in Memphis Tennessee with her old time duo ‘Sweet Bottom’ with Australian fiddler kat mear. We are in for a treat with the homecoming of our girl.

DJ Tina Turntables (Puhoi) has played everything from dive bars to outdoor festivals. Spinning a mixed gumbo of Soul, Funk & Disco, spiced up with Alt, Hip-Hop & Punk for over a decade around Tāmaki Makaurau. She co-hosted 95bFM’s Sunday soul show Back On The Goodfoot & currently hosts ‘calm down luv’ of Radio One & Pull Up To The Bumper on OAR FM since moving to Ōtepoti. Expect a little bit of everything with some surprises along the way.

After uncertain times prevented last year’s shows from going ahead, Reid is thrilled to be back at it for 2022, bringing a night of music, food & drink and festival community joy to the Port Chalmers Town Hall once again.
